What sensory toys do

Calming

Sensory input at a lower amplitude than the world is currently giving. For bodies overwhelmed by the ordinary: noise, light, demands. Often used for autism and anxiety.

Alerting

Sensory input at a higher amplitude than the world is currently giving. For bodies that are under-fed and have started to drift, fidget, or shut down. Often used for ADHD and sensory processing differences.

Fidget

Small, repetitive, hand-scale toys that give the body something to do while the mind does something else. Useful for focus, for managing anxiety, and for hands that need work.

Tactile

Toys that meet the skin with texture, temperature, pressure, or resistance. The hand's vocabulary. For bodies that need touch to know where they are.

Oral

Toys for the mouth to work on — biting, chewing, pressing back. The jaw asks for resistance the way the hand asks for texture, and gives the same deep, settling feedback when it gets it. For bodies that think better with something to chew.

Visual

Moving light, slow change, things to watch. The eye that's been hunting for somewhere to settle finally lands. For bodies that quiet once the gaze has somewhere to go.

Auditory

Toys that make a sound you set off yourself — a rattle, a chime, a rumble, a click. Hearing is the sense you can't close; sound arrives whether you want it or not. So a toy you can sound and silence at will hands back a control the ears don't normally get.

Cause and effect

Toys that answer the same way every time you act on them. The reliable answer teaches the mind to predict — press here, this happens — and teaches the body that it can make the world move. Few feelings land harder the first time.
