TFH has designed and manufactured sensory equipment for people with special needs for over 40 year, much of it developed directly for use in UK schools and SEND settings. We're the manufacturer, not a reseller, so everything we recommend for a school sensory room comes from decades of learning what actually works in a classroom.
Why schools build a sensory room
For pupils who struggle to self-regulate in a busy classroom, a sensory room offers somewhere to step away, settle, and come back ready to re-engage. It's not time off learning, it's what makes the rest of the school day possible for some pupils.
Sensory rooms in schools are commonly used to:
- Support pupils with autism, sensory processing differences, or PMLD to regulate before or after a triggering situation
- Provide a calm, controlled space built into an EHCP or behaviour support plan
- Give pupils an alternative way to engage with learning, away from the pressures of a traditional classroom
- Reduce repetitive motor behaviours and support attention, mood, and engagement, outcomes practitioners consistently report after real-world use

You don't need a dedicated room to get started. By starting with a Sensory Corner you can have access to some of the benefits and then expand it over time as budget allows. The modular design means nothing you buy now is wasted later as the corners are designed to work together.
Others go further with a full Sensory Room Package, or a bespoke design built around a specific space.
Designed and installed by TFH
Every sensory room we design comes from the team who also manufacture the equipment inside it, so the design accounts for how the kit performs, not just how it looks in a brochure. We offer installation across the UK, and we work with your builder or architect where needed. However, all our kit is easy to install so you can do it yourself if you have a team in place. All our equipment meets UK/EU safety standards for use in schools.
Schools FAQs
Can a sensory room support an EHCP or behaviour plan?
Yes, many schools use their sensory room as a named part of a pupil's support plan, giving staff a consistent, agreed space for regulation.
How much space do we actually need?
Less than most schools expect. A Sensory Corner can work in an underused classroom corner or a small breakout room, you don't need a dedicated large space to get real benefit. Alternatively, our portable sensory stations can be a good option, with easy set up in any room.
Do staff need training to use it?
Very little. Most schools find staff pick it up quickly with minimal guidance, and further training is available if you want it.
Is funding support available?
Sensory rooms in schools are often supported through SEND funding, grants, or charitable schemes.
