Multi-Sensory Environments (MSEs) or Sensory Rooms are dedicated spaces for providing sensory stimulation in a controlled atmosphere for individuals with learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or impairments. They come in all shapes and sizes and are designed to meet the needs of a particular client group. Sensory rooms are meant to build relationships and trust between the user and the facilitator whether that is a teacher, therapist, parent or other caregiver. Enjoy the time spent in a place where there are no expectations but to have fun.
Equipment for Multi-Sensory Environments
The equipment used to create an MSE can be designed to stimulate a specific sense or multiple senses at once. This can include lights, colored objects and projectors to visually stimulate and entertain. They can also be interactive, with games and puzzles to introduce tactile stimulation and improve motor skills. Sound sensitive items will provide auditory stimulation and allow individuals to experiment with creating sound. Soft play objects and interactive walls can also be used to not only create a safe and comfortable seating area but to provide tactile stimulation and aid with body awareness using inbuilt speakers.
At TFH, we offer a free design and consultation service to help you develop a sensory room that will improve the lives of those in your care. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 800-467-6222 to talk to a MSE Consultant.
