A Sensory Kit, individual toy, or portable sensory cart can be a collection of items that are readily available and handy for the use of students, patients, or staff during sensory overload or emotional distress. Items for the kit are chosen according to the needs of people or clients in a particular setting. People are encouraged to experiment using the various items to determine what they find useful for calming and alerting, sensory room facilitators are encouraged to watch body language and non verbal cues to better understand what distracts, engages, or calms the person. The Kit can be in a basket, box, or backpack. In order for the items in the kit to be used effectively staff members must be trained or understand the use of sensory modalities.
