Supporting Alzheimer’s Care Through Sensory Stimulation

World Alzheimer’s Month Spotlight

Every September, we come together for World Alzheimer’s Month, a global campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding dementia. More than 55 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias, and that number is expected to rise in the coming years.

While there is no cure yet, there are many ways we can improve the quality of life for those affected. One powerful approach is sensory stimulation.

People living with dementia often struggle to process the world around them. Loud noises may feel overwhelming, silence can be unsettling, and the brain has difficulty keeping up with all the sensory input. But here’s the hopeful part—when we use gentle sensory activities, we engage parts of the brain that are still active and accessible.

Sensory stimulation can:

  1. Reduce stress and agitation
  2. Improve mood and focus
  3. Encourage emotional connection
  4. Trigger positive memories
  5. Support independence in daily living

At TFH Canada, we believe in creating tools that bring comfort, calm, and dignity to individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. This World Alzheimer’s Month, we’re highlighting some of our favourite sensory products that provide meaningful engagement and reassurance.

Comfort and Companionship

Chloé the Comfort Cat & Theo the Therapy Dog

Soft, weighted, and wonderfully life-like, Chloé and Theo are designed to be held and cuddled. Their gentle weight provides deep pressure stimulation, their textures encourage tactile exploration, and Chloé even offers a soothing lavender scent and a hot/cold pack for added comfort. For someone experiencing restlessness or anxiety, these companions can be grounding, calming, and familiar.

Supporting Daily Independence

EazyHold® Universal Cuffs

Even small challenges—like holding utensils or grooming tools—can feel frustrating with Alzheimer’s. EazyHold® straps give back independence by making everyday tasks easier. Soft, flexible, and secure, they help individuals maintain dignity and confidence in their daily routines.

Tactile Engagement

Koosh Ball

A classic for a reason! The soft, stretchy tentacles make the Koosh Ball perfect for keeping hands busy. It’s quiet, lightweight, and endlessly fidget-friendly—helping ease anxiety while offering a satisfying sensory experience.

Bell Flower Table Tumbler

This colourful tabletop activity encourages movement and fine motor skills as bells tumble and chime with every spin. It’s visually engaging, auditory, and tactile all at once, making it a wonderful option for interactive sensory play.

Relaxation and Soothing Comfort

Shiatsu Heated Massage Cushion

Muscle tension and stress are common for individuals with dementia. This cushion combines gentle massage with optional heat, creating a calming cocoon of comfort. Whether used at home or in care settings, it helps promote relaxation and emotional well-being.

Calming Visual Stimulation

Table Top Bubble Column

Slowly changing colours and rising bubbles create a mesmerizing, soothing effect. Compact and portable, this bubble column can be placed on a table or bedside stand—bringing sensory calm right into everyday living spaces.

Illuminated Fibre Optic Plume

A soft rainbow light display in a safe, tactile format. The fibre optic plume adds beauty and gentle visual stimulation, encouraging relaxation and focus.

Small Tools, Big Difference

Alzheimer’s may change how someone experiences the world, but sensory tools can bridge the gap—providing comfort, sparking memories, and supporting moments of connection.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, let’s celebrate the power of simple, sensory-rich experiences to bring peace and joy into everyday care.
