Cognition or understanding and interacting with your environment has four distinct stages as identified French psychologist Jean Piaget in 1952. Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete Operational, and lastly the Formal Operational Stage. Blocks, puzzles, stacking, sorting and sequencing, along with concrete cause & effect enable people to learn how to manipulate and interact with the people and objects around them.
