Multi-Sensory Environments (MSE) or Sensory Rooms are spaces dedicated to providing sensory stimulation, in a unique, controlled atmosphere, for individuals with learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or impairments. These rooms are specially designed to create a comfortable and safe environment in which a person can be exposed to gentle sensory stimulation. This can help with the development of senses as well as coping with the background noise of everyday life, something certain people can struggle with.
Equipment for Multi-Sensory Environments
The equipment used to achieve an MSE can be designed to stimulate a specific sense or multiple senses at once. This can include lights, coloured objects and projectors - to visually stimulate and entertain. They can also be interactive to introduce tactile stimulation and improve motor skills. Sound sensitive items can be incorporated to provide auditory stimulation and allow individuals to experiment with creating sound. Soft play objects and interactive walls also, to not only create a safe and comfortable seating area but to provide tactile stimulation and aid with body awareness using inbuilt speakers.
At Special Needs Toys, we offer a free design and consultation service to help you develop a sensory room that will improve the lives of those in your care.
